As far as these things go, you can probably just add this to the list of trendy polls. I'm sure there are millions of people out there ready to switch back to Republicanism as soon as the bad taste from W gets washed from their mouths and the honeymoon with Obama wears off, but Gallup just released a poll that says only five states have Republican majorities: Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, and Nebraska. That's not many electoral votes. Like I said, this will most certainly change, but it's a long, steep climb back for the Republican Party.

If ever there were a time for the rise of a new, large political party, I think this would be it. It would, of course, have to be based largely on Republican values, but perhaps it could be a party truly based on Republican governmental (not moral) values. Ha. I'll believe it when I see it. Right now it would appear that Republicans would rather gamble with their political fate than actually exert any positive (or at least interesting) influence. If I hear the word tax cut one more time I'm going to throw up.
Quite right on many fronts. If Libertarians can't seize their chance now, then they never will. I'm sure there are other options for this "Republican Governmental Values" political party, but as far as a group that is formed and fairly well established, the Libertarians are it. It will be fascinating to watch what they make of this opportunity.
Could you believe the Republicans in the House voting 100% along party lines on the stimulus bill?!?! Even after concessions were made? It's baffling and, you're right, they "would rather gamble with their political fate than actually exert any positive influence."
